I confess, I have never played Banjo-Kazooie... or... any Banjo-Kazooie game. This Summer Games Done Quick 2025 block has certainly introduced me to a lot of game!
Our story begins at Gruntilda's castle. And she is pissed that she ain't pretty. When she realizes that this girl named Tooty is quite more good looking and plans on capturing her. While Tooty thinks she's just going to have a fun day with Banjo, she is viciously attacked and kidnapped and Kazooie desperately wakes Banjo up. By the time Banjo heads out, it's already too late. But we do meet Bottles, the short-sighted mole. Seems like Kazooie already doesn't like Bottles. Banjo, concerned about his sister finds out Tooty had been kidnapped and taken to Grunt's mountain lair. Easy, just gotta get up there and save her! Well... not before learning some moves. By seeking out molehills, I can learn a variety of moves which will be useful in my journey. The first one being simple. Camera controls. Using the C buttons to move the move the camera or holding R to keep the camera behind Banjo. Simple but useful! After getting a hang of the camera controls, I then learn how to swim. Using the control stick to swim and B button to dive! While underwater, I can hold A or B to control which character I want to help me swim. Oh yeah, I also find a honey comb underwater too and if I find 6, I can increase my energy! Next on the tutorial is jumping!... okay well I already know how to jump. But this deals with special jumps. Whether holding A to do a high jump or jumping then pressing jump again to have a double jump. Or holding Z and then pressing A to let Kazooie give me a boosted jump! That lets me jump the platforms at the edge of the tutorial zone!
I see... something behind a waterfall in the distance. But I just can't quite seem to get to it. So I moved on to climbing. Pretty simple. Climb up a tree. Oh and the big mountain in the middle of the tutorial level. Time to take Grunty down! Oh wait... I can't... apparently I didn't learn everything and the bridge is broken and won't be fixed until I learn everything. Including a Beaky Barge which is essentially a sliding attack. And man... Kazooie really doesn't like Bottles. I don't think Kazooie enjoys being... used... next up is the claw swipe. Which is exactly what it sounds like. I use my bear claws, I swipe. And a roll attack that lets me roll into enemies! Oh yeah... Kazooie desperately wants to fly too. So after I roll, Bottles finally gives Kazooie attack where she can pop out of the backpack and do a little... pecking! So now I learned everything and I can head to Grunty's mountain lair! Where we see Tooty and Grunty are in these machines. And essentially they will swap DNA. In a way that Grunty will become pretty and Tooty will become ugly. I gotta stop that before that happens. Inside the lair is a Jiggy that I can use to complete a picture. There's a slope to my left... that I seemingly can't get up. No matter what I try. Oh well... on to the other way! I find the picture in question and use the Jiggy to complete it. After that, the door to Mumbo's Mountain is open! So that is where I head next! This is where the bulk of my collectables will be including notes and mumbo tokens. And 5 Jinjos I need to collect to get Jiggys.
Along my exploration, I come across my other things, like a bull I seemingly can't defeat. It's just there to torment me. Along with another jiggy on what I'll call semicircle isle. I also check out this spider tower as I'll call it. But I can't seem to do much when in it as when I get to the 2nd platform, I just slide right the fuck off it. So I have to abandon that for now until I figure out how I can climb it. Oh yeah, I also find some eggs for Kazooie too. I'll eventually find out how I can shoot them. One of the biggest moves I lean is the Talon Trot which lets me use Kazooie as an alternate way of moving. Letting me use Kazooie to move will let me climb steep slopes. Very useful! Not very helpful in spider tower though. I get the mumbo token... but that's about it. I also find a little home of the Mumbos. They do call it Mumbo's Mountain. I also meet with Bottles again for a new move. By jumping in pressing Z, I can essentially ground pound. Of course... using Kazooie as a sacrifice for my fall. Thank you Kazooie! Inside the Mumbo house is Mumbo himself! Where he can offer to help me on my journey. Of course I am just one short of a Mumbo token so I need to find the 5th one to actually get help. There's also this Conga dude who just loves chucking Oranges. Hey now don't waste food! And... I don't know... I guess his son?... wants to have the oranges. You know from a distance... Chimpy kind of looks like Diddy Kong... I guess they are both young monkeys. I try to get on the platform that has all the eggs but to no success. I find out I can climb Conga's tree and collect an orange. But I guess I go brain dead because I forget to give the damn orange to Chimpy... oh and I die too. Cool. Because I die, I lost everything I collected. Okay not everything. I do keep the mumbo tokens and jiggy's. But I do lose everything else.
So I start to recollect everything... but... for some fucking dumb ass reason, I head to the start of the level where I stand on the little Banjo-Kazooie pedestal which teleports me outside of the mountain. And yes... when I head back in, I lost all my shit again... COOL! At least that one was on my dumbass brain. This time I get the orange to Chimpy. After that, the platform he is on raises so that I am able to get up to the platform with all of those eggs. I also spawn a Jiggy outside the mountain too. I almost thought my game crashed but I guess it just freezes briefly whenever I spawn a Jiggy outside of the level I am in. Man... Conga was so convinced he was safe. But little did he know... I was at his height with eggs. Be both play a game of chuck shit at each other for a while but I eventually come out on top with a Jiggy! And also now that I have 5 Jiggy's I am able to let Mumbo do his magic with me. What does it do?... I turn into a spider. It's actually more useful than you think. Remember spider mountain? Yeah I can actually climb that up now! Also all the spiders complement my backpack and even want it. Sorry folks, it ain't for sale. Remember that thingy I couldn't collect back in the tutorial area that was behind the waterfall? One of those was on top of this mountain. It's a 1up. Now I know! For a little while I try searching for the last Jinjo. But I eventually give up. I was going to spend 3 hours trying to look for it. I may try to search it next time I play this. For now I use the notes I collected to unlock another area in Grunty's mountain. But we'll have to find out where that goes next time!
When I go to save and quit, I thought I ended up fucking up horribly since there was a cutscene that showed Grunty and Tooty swapping looks. Where Grunty became a supermodel and Tooty... an ugly ass ape. Thankfully though I don't think that actually means anything. It's just a red herring game over scene that's supposed to make you feel bad about yourself. Man... I tell you... Rare sure is one evil ass video game company.
