I knew I had a good feeling about this game. In just the short time I got to showcase Viewfinder, yeah I was in love. It's such a unique puzzle game that's just really fun to play. With a nice and soothing atmosphere as well!
Uh oh it would appear I have fallen through a broken bridge. That's not good. Luckily for me this game has a rewind feature! How sweet is that? Rewind the game like a VHS tape... and use the more sturdy bridge this time. So basically the main gimmick of the game is that you can take photos, place them down anywhere and just... walk inside them. Holy fuck that is trippy. The goal is to use the photos to help you get around where you need to go. You can also rotate said photos if needed. Some photos might not lead you anywhere. Maybe like a picture of a peaceful sunset or bright blue sky. But they can be used to create holes in spaces you need to go. Oh and sometimes photos can just glitch the fuck out and break the simulation. Oh yeah did I mention we're in a simulation? Yeah this world isn't real believe it or not. Then again, video game worlds in general aren't real. A quick restart of the systems get things back online though. And also not glitchy. Throughout this adventure, we also get snippets of moments featuring Hiraya and Aharon. Aharon seeming to be someone Hiraya admires. Sounds like he's quite an artist himself. Oh yeah, pictures don't have to look realistic. I do find it pleasing being able to walk through sketch photos, watercolors, even kids drawings! Are these works of Aharon? I was most impressed by the retro world photo. Vibes of 90s and early 2000s PC games! The next level set features a photocopier. I guess I must've had Job Simulator on the minds because I thought I could literally put a battery on it and copy it. No no I had to take the photo of the battery and copy it that way. Clever shit. It does take me a moment to figure out where I am doing from here. However, I do eventually realize that the photo on the round table, near the paints does have a teleporter in it. It was... very much hidden in plain sight. Suddenly, incoming train!... with a... fucking... talking cat inside. Named Cait. Cait the cat. I do have one more optional challenge I can do in this area before I move on. It wasn't bad. More about becoming very familiar with photo rotating. And sometimes realizing you need to put a photo at your feet. Not just simply in front of you. Now then. The train. To Hiraya's station! These levels (at least the first view) focus on perception.
Kind of reminds me of Superliminal where you have to look in a very specific spot to complete an image. That's the idea here. And sometimes you need to get inconvenient shit out of the way just so you can even stand in the right spot. And sometimes you need to know just how pictures work to begin with. The next section does just that. Finding 3 levels reveals a red, blue, and green layers of an image. When you combine them together, you get the full color! In the next level... ooooh now I am the one taking the pictures! I can look through a... VIEWFINDER of a camera! Using the pictures I take to find my way. And hell, even using it to clone objects like batteries to power teleporters. And hell, taking pictures of cameras themselves! Using the clone camera to get the right angle of a teleporter to complete the level. There's an optional challenge here too I can do. It takes me a moment to figure it out. But I soon realize that after I take a picture of the wall, I stand to the left of it and have to position the clone just right so then I can take a picture of the back of the teleporter... and make sure I get it all in frame. Then rotate THAT image and complete the level. And that's where I call it a day. Oh yeah. This is a fun one. When I say I feel good about an incoming new game, I sure as hell don't lie.
That or Mr. Wheel can actually listen to me and give me a fun new game.
