I hate setting up VR.

Playing NES games in 3D wasn't enough. No no I needed to play NES games in 3D and VR. Giving us... 3DSEN VR! Let me tell you, the experience didn't disappoint. The experience setting it up did though.

Trying to get my VR headset to connect... okay let me be specific here. My headset did indeed connect through Quest Link. However getting VR games working was another story. For some reason my Quest 2 just could not see that VR games were being opened. Despite my set being plugged in and the feature to let outside apps interact with the VR headset was enabled. Alright off to a good fucking start. Thankfully after restarting quite literally everything, that seemed to help. And now we were off to the races! This time, I just handpicked what games I wanted to play instead of spinning a dollar store wheel to determine what games I play. I started with everyone's favorite, Super Mario Bros! I am so fucking glad I could play this with my Switch controller. I don't think playing with the Quest 2 controllers would've been fun. Imagine trying to play NES games with nothing but a joystick? Oh yes, the ability to do the negative world glitch was very much possible here. Although I did jump out of the wall and make it to 1-3. Hell I even got to burn down a Bowser in VR! Now that's fun! My time for this game ran out towards the end of 2-1 where my ears were assaulted with a loud ass ringing bell. I decided to go for some Tetris next. There's not much you can do to make this game more immersive. Other than give each on screen panel a little depth. At least it was nice to see where my pieces were going to land. That was cool. I ended up making to level 4, peppermint colors before my time ran out here. Moving onward to Balloon Fight... or in this case... Balloon Trip. To start. Really felt like I was flying through space! Popping all the balloons and not being sparked in the face. Alright alright I do move to the main mode after a couple of trips. I didn't do too bad in the first few rounds and had a solid bonus game. Missing only 1 balloon I believe. Next levels went smoothly and I had another good bonus game. Also missing only 1 balloon. Now it's time to really get deep in the stomach and do some Dr. Mario. Just like Tetris, there isn't much you could do to really make this game immersive other than giving each element some depth. Though the magnifying glass actually did have a lens over it which was cool. I was never really that good at Dr. Mario.

The first few levels are decent. Though when you start to have just every virus on screen come level 3, and with the speed of the dropping pills, you're bound to make some mistakes. Though time ran out anyway so I got to move on to... Excitebike! This one looked really different. It's very folded. The track is closest to you while the background and time are in the back behind the track. It's a very unique layout. First track is smooth. 66 seconds and a 1st place finish! 2nd track was solid too. Just a stroll in the day... maybe a crash or two but... I did still finish with a 1:12 time and 1st place! Stage 3 was the first night stage. Not a pretty performance. But a 1:25 time still gets me 2nd. Didn't have time to complete stage 4. Didn't matter. Pinball got really immersive here. Especially if you have the play screen at an angle it really does feel like you are actually playing pinball. Was I great? No. I had a shot at the bonus level but trying to make it through that tiny ass door in such an awkward position was... well I couldn't do it in time. I almost feel like I can't go back to playing NES pinball the regular way. This truly was a unique and fun experience. When I played Duck Hunt, I used an actual zapper... I mean... one in game. They had a custom zapper model for the zapper games. I don't actually know if the same applies in the non VR version of 3DSEN. I was decent but trying to shoot those ducks wasn't easy. Not as easy if you played on a regular emulator and used your mouse cursor. I did find it to be a little easier if I zoomed the camera in. Still wasn't perfect but I felt like I was being more consistent. I suppose this really is the closest thing to getting the real zapper experience. Damn if maybe I had a light bulb to shoot into. And hey while we're on the subject of ducks, let's do some DuckTales! This definitely had a more 2.5D vibe. I never did make it past The Amazon. Though you could blame the weird ass angles I was playing in. Don't know how I found myself circling around this stage. Then again I guess when you're going left I mean yeah you're bound to find yourself back at the start. Super Mario Bros. 3 is a way more fun game to play anyway. Funny how the enemies are 3-dimensional but Mario is flat like paper. Like seriously they couldn't model a 3D Mario?

For shits and giggles I got the warp whistle from level 3. Wasn't going to use it though Mario does become briefly see through when he falls through the white block. Until you jump. And sadly as much as I wanted to, in the regular toad house, you can't get a sneak peek at what is in the chests. I'm surprised I actually got a full mushroom in the spade minigame. My run ended in the first mini fortress... and then I took a dip in the lava... no literally I. I zoomed all the way into the little lava puddle and... felt absolutely nothing because...

It's a bunch of 3Dified pixels being brought right to my eyes through the power of VR!
